Exciting times down at Canning Town

FORGET THE OLYMPICS… the real event in Newham this summer is Industri[us]

Industri[us] is a great example how people + hard work x enormous spirit and determination = amazing energy and change

With the help of our many, many wonderful supporters we are delighted to report that from July 20th we will be fully operational and looking amazing!

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

The brown site we were awarded in the Meanwhile London competition has been completely transformed.  Approaching Industri[us] from Canning Town Station or indeed from the Emirates Air Line Cable Car (just around the corner) you will be met with two beautifully landscaped open squares and the smell of delicious street food, courtesy of traders at Urban Feasts.

You can then marvel at the artistic talents of Rosetta Arts’ community art wall and the ROBOTS >>>> Canning Town Giant. You will be drawn to the beacon that is our Make/Shift Market and indulge in a little retail therapy, amazed at the alchemy some folks have to be able to make discarded material look so good. And all before you take the Ping Pong Challenge at our custom built pavilion.

There is something for everyone this summer at Industri[us]. Come and join in!

We’ve opened up our front garden…

… and invited a few friends to visit.

We had a great weekend opening the site up to the public.  We cannot praise Urban Feasts‘ delicious food traders enough for all the wonderful goodies and good temper given the inclement weather, and not forgetting are marvellous upcyclers f-a-c-e who were on hand all weekend.

Groundwork UK and Serco did an amazing job getting our front garden ready for our visitors.

We greatly appreciate all the locals and those who came from further a field that came to visit. It was great to be able to point to the base of the structure that’s going to be our Make/Shift Market and venue, to get a sense of the space that will be our outdoor event space and of course admire the fantastic work Robots >>>> and Rosetta Art have done on site.

Most importantly it was great to see people enjoying the space!

Thank you all and we look forward to seeing you next week when Urban Feasts are there once more from Thursday to Sunday, see here for more details.

We will be back on site presenting the Playful Ping Pong Pavillion and the postponed Paint your City… Events on July 7th and 8th from 11am – 4pm. Admission is free, we hope to see you there.

Levelling the way

Balfour Beatty, who are resurfacing the main road outside our hoarding, have donated 20 tonnes of road planings to provide a level surface for Urban Feasts‘ street food market. Another 120 tonnes is to follow from Conway next week!

Lift off in Canning Town!

Industri[us] at Canning Town is getting up and running – we need you to get involved.

We’re excited to announce that the Industri[us] Festival of Upcycling is going ahead thanks to the generous support of Groundwork and Serco – we’ll be starting works on site in Canning Town on Monday

What we’ll be doing – the three parts of Industri[us]

  1. MAKE/SHIFT – a stunning covered structure will form the focal point of Industri[us] activities on the Canning Town site. Here, upcycled goods will be showcased and sold. A street food court run by Urban Feasts, as well as entertainment events and themed activities, is to take place alongside the market.
  2. ENGINE ROOM – a range of innovative designer-makers working in material reuse will occupy workshop spaces, alongside local start-ups and others with a great ideas who are in need of a springboard. We’re collaborating with Cody Dock to deliver the Engine Room within a ten minute walk from Make/Shift.
  3. SPOTLIGHT – a large-scale installation space that will be a signpost for Industri[us] and a place for public spectacle. Now planned for 2013, it’s planned to launch with The Final Bid – conceived by artist Michael Pinsky – a dynamic auction in which ‘upcycled’ lots are suspended at heights determined by their value, ascending or descending as the bidding progresses.

The site

On the Olympics Spectator Walking Route, Industri[us] is in a fantastic location – there will be an estimated 80,000 people en route to ExCeL passing the site in Canning Town each day during the 2012 Games.

Timeline

Industri[us] will launch in Canning Town over the Jubilee Weekend at the beginning of June, with events also taking place at the end of June to tie in with the London Festival of Architecture Royal Docks ‘hub’ weekend. By the 2012 Games, Make/Shift will be in full operation on the Canning Town site.

Pre-launch events will start on site from late May, where you’ll be able to come try your ideas for events and activities out.

WE NEED YOU!

Industri[us] is looking for people to get involved. Right now, we are looking to grow our network of designer-makers who upcycle and want to take a stall at the Make/Shift market and/or a space at the Engine Room workshops. If this is you or someone you know (spread the word!), please get in touch.

If this is not you, but you like what you’ve read about Industri[us] and want to be part of it, don’t let that stop you e-mailing us too. We would love to hear from you!
