All lit up

Even though the last posting is far more informative, we had to upload the latest photos from last weekend to give a sneak peek of our wonderful scaffolding structure, all lit up.

The gang on site did a fantastic job cladding the structure with an assortment of discarded material before the shrink wrap and lighting crew worked there magic and created this:

This is the structure empty can you imagine how great its going to look with all our wonderful upcyclers works in place.  Roll on Saturday 28th at 12pm!

Launch cancelled but Starting Point in Sight

I think all of us on site can empathise with our Olympic hopefuls!

Our starting point is just over a week away too – Saturday July 28th!  We are thrilled with the prospect of you all enjoying what has been many months in the planning.

Balfour Beatty have been running relays from our site opposite Canning Town Station to theirs next door, delivering pavers and plainings.

The Groundwork Team‘s muscles have been getting a consistent workout laying the pavers and plants in our wonderful front gardens, helped in no small way by the wonderful guidance and direction of the Landscape Group and coach Frank!

Urban Feast traders have been scoring highly in opening trials and we are delighted to have them take poll position on site, each day.

For those with a more competitive spirit we have the Ping Pong Pavilion where you can challenge a person or 12 for the crown of Ping Pong King or Queen.

Not to be confused with the Pearly King, who is much involved with the Cockney Museum which will take up residence or at least parking space on site, in its custom designed Bendy Bus from early August.

We are also delighted to showcase great energy efficient models on site such as Lumi-solar’s, hybrid solar and wind powered street lamp and Electric Pedal’s pedal powered cinema, phone charger and music player.

We are very fortunate to have local couture house Caramel Rock putting on a fantastic fashion show in August.

These are just some of the highlights this summer at the really exciting Industri[us] site this summer.  We hope to see you there to cheer us on!

Exciting times down at Canning Town

FORGET THE OLYMPICS… the real event in Newham this summer is Industri[us]

Industri[us] is a great example how people + hard work x enormous spirit and determination = amazing energy and change

With the help of our many, many wonderful supporters we are delighted to report that from July 20th we will be fully operational and looking amazing!

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

The brown site we were awarded in the Meanwhile London competition has been completely transformed.  Approaching Industri[us] from Canning Town Station or indeed from the Emirates Air Line Cable Car (just around the corner) you will be met with two beautifully landscaped open squares and the smell of delicious street food, courtesy of traders at Urban Feasts.

You can then marvel at the artistic talents of Rosetta Arts’ community art wall and the ROBOTS >>>> Canning Town Giant. You will be drawn to the beacon that is our Make/Shift Market and indulge in a little retail therapy, amazed at the alchemy some folks have to be able to make discarded material look so good. And all before you take the Ping Pong Challenge at our custom built pavilion.

There is something for everyone this summer at Industri[us]. Come and join in!

English Summer Strikes Again!

Apologies everyone but we have had to cancel our events and the food market due to inclement weather.

We will be taking a break from the market and events until July 20th when we will open once more with our wonderful Make/Shift Market complete and open for business and our site beautifully prepared awaiting you visit.

London Festival of Architecture weekend – 7th/8th July

We are delighted to have our (slightly later than scheduled but worth the wait!) LFA events on site. It is quite fitting that the first event be architecturally themed, given that this Industri[us] is the brainchild of architectural practice Fluid.

Free and fun for all. Full details can be found on our Facebook page.

We hope to see you there!

SATURDAY 7th JULY

————————–

First up, on Saturday you can try your hand at multi-layer ping pong in the beautifully designed Playful Ping Pong Pavilion.  The dismountable pavilion structure is a cross-Atlantic collaboration – designed and installed by students from Oxford Brookes and Montana State Universities.

At 5pm there will be a special architectural league event, which will run until 10pm.

You’ll also be able to enjoy the wonderful tastes and aromas of Urban Feasts street food market from 12pm until 9pm. Alcohol in moderation can be purchased on site.

SUNDAY 8th JULY

————————–

Urban Feasts will be on hand once more to tempt you with their wonderful street market food.

The pavilion will be in full swing (pardon the pun) and we will be welcome two more of our collaborators Guerilla Science and Buro Happold onto site for….

Paint the City…. Red, Blue, Orange.  If you fancy yourself as an urban warrior take this opportunity to help build a working catapult and practice your aim at a specially prepared London skyscape.

We’ve opened up our front garden…

… and invited a few friends to visit.

We had a great weekend opening the site up to the public.  We cannot praise Urban Feasts‘ delicious food traders enough for all the wonderful goodies and good temper given the inclement weather, and not forgetting are marvellous upcyclers f-a-c-e who were on hand all weekend.

Groundwork UK and Serco did an amazing job getting our front garden ready for our visitors.

We greatly appreciate all the locals and those who came from further a field that came to visit. It was great to be able to point to the base of the structure that’s going to be our Make/Shift Market and venue, to get a sense of the space that will be our outdoor event space and of course admire the fantastic work Robots >>>> and Rosetta Art have done on site.

Most importantly it was great to see people enjoying the space!

Thank you all and we look forward to seeing you next week when Urban Feasts are there once more from Thursday to Sunday, see here for more details.

We will be back on site presenting the Playful Ping Pong Pavillion and the postponed Paint your City… Events on July 7th and 8th from 11am – 4pm. Admission is free, we hope to see you there.
